The Black Phone 2

The Black Phone 2 (2025)

Black Phone 2 expands the mythology of the original in some interesting ways, but struggles to recapture the tension and suspense that made the first film memorable. Despite strong performances, an effective villain, and a few genuinely creepy moments, the sequel often feels slow, repetitive, and overly reliant on dream sequences that never build enough momentum. There are good ideas here, but the execution never fully comes together.

Why Watch Our Review

We discuss why Black Phone 2 feels like it has all the right ingredients but never quite delivers the payoff we were hoping for, how Ethan Hawke remains a compelling horror villain despite limited screen time, and why the film’s dream-heavy storytelling eventually starts working against it. We also break down the sequel’s shift toward supernatural horror, the influence of classic 1980s horror films, the frozen-lake setting, the movie’s eerie visual style, and whether fans of the original film will be more forgiving of its slower pacing than we were.
