Natalie Erika James’ Ascension Is Official at Apple TV

Natalie Erika James told us earlier this year that she was working on her first television series for Apple TV. We spent that week revisiting her work for our Natalie Erika James Director Spotlight, including a conversation with James about Relic, Apartment 7A, Saccharine, and what she had coming next. Now Apple has officially announced Ascension and revealed the larger creative team behind it.

James and longtime collaborator Christian White will co-showrun the one-hour psychological horror thriller, with James also serving as lead director. The writing team includes James, White, Alfonso Cuarón, and Carlos Cuarón, while Caitríona Balfe will star and executive produce. Alfonso Cuarón will also executive produce through Esperanto Filmoj.

When James joined us for The Fear Review earlier this year, she described Ascension as being told in a “collage like way,” with multiple timelines and some found-footage elements. She was clearly excited about the project then, and Apple’s announcement now gives us a much clearer picture of what she was teasing.

Ascension Turns a Cult Investigation Into Psychological Horror

Ascension is inspired by Adam Nevill’s novel Last Days and follows Rose, a recently divorced mother and documentary filmmaker investigating a mysterious 20th-century cult called the Church of Ascension.

As Rose digs deeper, she begins finding unexpected comfort in the cult’s teachings before discovering something much darker underneath. Apple says the series will explore evil, innocence, sacrifice, and how far someone will go to protect the people they love.

That setup lines up closely with what James told us months ago. She described a documentary filmmaker investigating survivors of a doomsday cult and the supernatural claims surrounding what happened to them, with the story eventually beginning to bleed into the filmmaker’s own life.

The combination of documentary storytelling, multiple timelines, and found footage makes this sound less like a straightforward cult mystery and more like the kind of psychological horror James already does well.

What We Think

This one already had our attention because Natalie Erika James told us about it before Apple made the project official. The addition of Caitríona Balfe gives Amy another reason to care immediately. She has been a huge Outlander fan for years, read the books and companion material, collected the comics, and followed the Starz series, so seeing Balfe move into psychological horror with James is an easy sell in our house.

The rest of the creative team only helps. James and Christian White are running the series together, Alfonso and Carlos Cuarón are writing with them, and James is also serving as lead director. That last part matters because the unusual structure she described to us will need a strong hand to keep the different timelines, documentary material, and found footage from feeling scattered.

James told us she was very, very excited about Ascension. Now that Apple has officially revealed what she was working on, it is easy to see why.
