The Cycle Horror Movie Gets Stephen King’s Approval
The Cycle horror movie has Stephen King’s attention. The author called Shudder’s upcoming Deborah Ann Woll film “special” ahead of its October premiere.
The Cycle horror movie just got the kind of recommendation that can move a film to the top of a watchlist in a hurry. Stephen King pointed fans toward Shudder’s upcoming release this week, calling it “special” and telling people to mark October on their calendars.
The endorsement arrives several weeks before The Cycle premieres on Shudder. The film stars Deborah Ann Woll and Jeffrey Donovan, with Jordan Downey directing.
Why The Cycle Horror Movie Has Stephen King’s Attention

King wrote on X that he does not usually promote horror movies unless they are his own, then added, “This is special.” He did not post a full review or reveal anything about the story. It was a short recommendation, but it was enough to put a much brighter spotlight on the movie.
Downey has described The Cycle as a love letter to King’s work, which makes the endorsement especially meaningful for the filmmaker. It is still worth keeping expectations in check. King’s post is a personal recommendation, not proof that every horror fan will have the same reaction.
What The Cycle Is About
The story begins when police find the body of a man who disappeared 36 years earlier beside a horrific crime scene. Their only lead is his estranged daughter, Meg, played by Woll. As she starts digging into the past, she finds a secret her father apparently hoped would stay buried with him.
Donovan also stars, along with Gretchen Corbett, Will Hochman, Dana Millican, Jack Doolan and Carl W. Crudup. Downey directed and co-wrote the film with Kevin Stewart. His previous horror work includes The Head Hunter and a segment in V/H/S/Beyond.
The Cycle was already on our radar through Shudder’s Season of Screams lineup and its place in the Fantastic Fest 2026 lineup. King’s recommendation gives the Cycle horror movie a timely new reason to watch, without spoiling the mystery that appears to drive it.
Watch The Cycle Trailer
The official teaser keeps the larger explanation vague. It mixes a grim crime scene, a long-buried family secret and a few unsettling glimpses of something that should probably have stayed dead.
What We Think
King’s comment is the headline, but the trailer is the part that makes this feel like more than a celebrity recommendation. The movie looks like a nasty family mystery that keeps getting stranger as Meg pulls at it, and Woll is a strong choice to carry that kind of story.
We also like that the teaser refuses to explain exactly what is happening. There are signs of something supernatural, but not enough to flatten the mystery before the movie arrives. King may have put The Cycle on more calendars, but the premise and cast give it plenty of reasons to stay there.
The Cycle premieres exclusively on Shudder on Friday, October 23, 2026.
