The Buddy box office debut turned Casper Kelly’s smiling orange unicorn into an unlikely theatrical winner. The Roadside Attractions and Saban Films release earned an estimated $5,363,827 from 1,258 North American theaters over August 28–30, debuting at No. 6.

That result more than doubled the roughly $2.5 million forecast reported before the weekend. It also gave the original film one of 2026’s most notable openings for a release playing on fewer than 1,800 screens.

Buddy Box Office Opening More Than Doubles Forecast

According to Deadline, Buddy delivered Roadside Attractions’ biggest opening since the pandemic and the distributor’s second-largest opening overall. It also became the biggest opening in Saban Films’ 12-year history.

Box Office Mojo lists a $4,263 per-theater average. That is a strong showing for a film that opened on substantially fewer screens than most of the weekend’s top releases and suggests that the movie found an audience beyond Kelly’s existing cult following.

A Strange Children’s Show Finds Its Audience

Buddy takes place inside the colorful world of a children’s television show where a group of kids sing, dance and help the title character spread happiness. When one child refuses to follow the program, the cheerful setting begins to fracture.

Kelly directed the film and co-wrote it with Jamie King. The cast includes Cristin Milioti, Delaney Quinn, Patton Oswalt, Michael Shannon, Topher Grace and Keegan-Michael Key. Kelly is best known for the viral Adult Swim short Too Many Cooks, making Buddy his theatrical feature debut.

What We Think

An original horror movie doing more than twice what the industry expected is arguably more encouraging than another franchise victory. Kelly already proved that his warped take on children’s television could build a cult audience online. The Buddy box office result suggests that the same sensibility can also bring people to theaters. Will this turn into another Five Nights at Freddy’s?

The second weekend will show whether word of mouth can turn Buddy into a genuine sleeper hit, but the debut is already a win for strange, filmmaker-driven horror that does not arrive with a familiar franchise name attached.
