Postmortem at Screamfest is bringing a resurrection ritual, a morgue and a grieving medical examiner to the festival for its world premiere Saturday, October 10.

Written and directed by Colombian filmmaker Andrés Beltrán, Postmortem stars Odette Annable as Helena Martinez, a medical examiner trying to hold her family together six months after her husband’s death. Then sixteen bodies arrive at her morgue at once, all members of an elderly cult that died during a ritual intended to bring their leader back from the dead.

Postmortem at Screamfest Turns Grief Into a Resurrection Story

Screamfest’s synopsis gives the setup another turn when Helena discovers that the cult recorded its ceremony and learns that one member survived. He claims the ritual can still be completed. For someone already consumed by grief, that possibility makes the case much more personal than anything waiting on an autopsy table.

Annable leads a cast that also includes Allegra Leguizamo, Julio Cesar Cedillo, Andres Londono and Tony Revolori. Beltrán previously directed the supernatural thriller Tarumama, which premiered at Sitges, and the survival thriller Quicksand.

The World Premiere Lands October 10

Postmortem will make its world premiere at Screamfest on Saturday, October 10 at 5 p.m. PT. The 91-minute feature joins a Screamfest slate that also includes Wounds, which brings its practical-effects nightmare to Screamfest on October 8.

The story centers its supernatural threat on Helena’s grief, turning the resurrection ritual into a personal temptation as well as the mystery driving the film.
