Walking into Scary Movie 6, I had one major concern. The marketing leaned heavily into the idea that the franchise was returning to say all the things modern comedies are supposedly afraid to say. That immediately raised my expectations because the Wayans brothers have always excelled at fearless parody. They’re at their best when they’re willing to make fun of absolutely everyone, and I hoped this movie would lean all the way into that reputation.
After watching it, I realized my expectations were probably a little different than what the movie was actually trying to accomplish. It absolutely continues the franchise’s equal-opportunity approach to comedy, and I appreciate that. Nobody feels off limits. The jokes aren’t aimed at one particular group or perspective; they’re spread across everything and everyone. In today’s entertainment landscape, that actually feels surprisingly refreshing.
Where I came away slightly disappointed is that I kept waiting for the movie to push just a little bit harder. There are moments where it gets close, but because the marketing suggested something even bolder, I found myself expecting another level that never quite arrived. That’s less a criticism of the comedy itself and more a result of how the film was sold.
That said, I still laughed consistently throughout the movie. The theater was having a great time, and comedy like this absolutely benefits from seeing it with a crowd. Hearing everyone react together made several jokes land even better than they probably would have at home.
I also appreciated how many horror films they managed to parody without making the movie feel like a simple checklist of references. The jokes come quickly, and even if one doesn’t land for you, another usually follows a few seconds later. That’s always been one of this franchise’s greatest strengths.
If you’re someone who enjoys spoof comedies like the original Scary Movie films or Airplane!, you’ll probably have a great time. If you’ve never liked this style of comedy, this installment isn’t going to change your mind. For me, it’s an entertaining return that made me hopeful the franchise continues—even if I’d love to see the next one become just a little more fearless. That lands at a solid Matinee.

This is exactly the kind of comedy I enjoy. I don’t go into a Scary Movie expecting clever social commentary or an emotional story. I go because I want to laugh, see ridiculous horror references, and watch people completely commit to the dumbest jokes imaginable. That’s exactly what this movie delivers.
One thing I really appreciated is that the comedy never felt mean-spirited. Instead of targeting one specific group of people, the movie makes fun of everybody. That’s always been part of why these movies work for me. If everyone is fair game, nobody feels singled out, and it becomes much easier to simply relax and enjoy the joke.
The audience around us clearly felt the same way. People were laughing throughout the entire movie, and hearing a packed theater react together made the experience even better. This is one of those films where watching it at home simply wouldn’t be quite the same because so much of the fun comes from sharing those reactions with everyone else.
I also loved seeing the franchise embrace modern horror movies while still feeling like classic Scary Movie. The references come so quickly that I was constantly looking around to see if other people caught the same jokes I did. Even when one reference didn’t completely land, another funny moment was already happening.
William wanted the movie to push the comedy a little further, and I understand what he means. Personally, I didn’t need that. I was already laughing enough that I left the theater happy. Sometimes it’s okay for a comedy to simply be funny instead of trying to shock people every few minutes.

We’d spent the previous couple of weeks watching several very heavy horror films, so sitting down with something light, ridiculous, and completely unserious felt like exactly what we needed. It reminded me why I loved these movies when they first came out.
