Whalefall Trailer Traps Austin Abrams Inside a Whale

The full Whalefall trailer has arrived, and it makes the survival thriller’s impossible premise feel painfully claustrophobic. Austin Abrams plays Jay Gardiner, a diver who is swallowed by a massive sperm whale and left with only one hour of oxygen.

Directed by Brian Duffield, the film opens in theaters October 16, 2026. It is based on Daniel Kraus’ novel, with a screenplay by Duffield and Kraus.

One hour of oxygen

Jay enters the water off California’s central coast while searching for the remains of his father, played by Josh Brolin. After a giant squid attack and the encounter with the whale, his dive becomes a countdown inside a living creature.

The new trailer expands the earlier teaser with more of the physical ordeal and the fractured father-son relationship beneath it. Jay’s memories of his father may provide the knowledge he needs to escape, turning the survival story into a reckoning with grief as well as biology.

A contained thriller on an enormous scale

The cast also includes Elisabeth Shue, John Ortiz, Jane Levy, and Emily Rudd. Yet much of the movie will necessarily rest on Abrams, who has to carry the tension while trapped in an environment that is dark, wet, unstable, and running out of air.

Duffield has shown an interest in genre stories with strong emotional engines, and Whalefall gives him a striking challenge: make the inside of a whale feel physically believable without losing the strange grandeur of the premise.

What We Think

The trailer sells the movie best when it stops feeling like a novelty and starts feeling like a panic attack. Being trapped underwater is already primal horror; placing that struggle inside an animal where another danger is trapped with you turns every movement, sound, and breath into another threat.

On the surface, a movie like this could easily be popcorn fun, but adding a father-son element and actors like Brolin and Abrams gives it the potential to be something more. If Duffield can keep the action tense while still feeling realistic and the emotion honest, Whalefall could be one of the fall’s most unusual theatrical thrillers. Now I just have to convince Amy to watch it.
