Backrooms HBO Max Premiere Set for September 25

The Backrooms HBO Max premiere is set for September 25, giving viewers who missed A24’s viral horror phenomenon in theaters a new way to enter Kane Parsons’ endless maze.

HBO Max announced the streaming date on August 25. The film has already completed its theatrical run and arrived on digital, but its move to a major subscription service could introduce the internet-born nightmare to an even larger audience.

From Viral YouTube Horror to an A24 Feature

Writer-director Kane Parsons built his version of the Backrooms through a series of viral YouTube shorts before making his feature debut with A24. The film stars Renate Reinsve and Chiwetel Ejiofor, with Will Soodik sharing screenplay credit with Parsons.

That path remains one of the most fascinating parts of the project. The movie did not begin as a studio-created franchise engineered for an online audience. It grew from a creator using digital effects and found-footage language to make empty yellow hallways feel like a place viewers could accidentally enter.

Its HBO Max arrival also gives the film another chance to reach horror fans who followed the online mythology but did not see the theatrical release. The official streaming date lands as audiences begin shifting toward fall and Halloween viewing.

What We Think

Backrooms was a surprise for both Amy and me despite our different ratings. Neither of us followed the YouTube videos or knew of Kane Parsons prior to our viewing. I walked out of the theater surprised by how much I liked it considering I had very little interest going in, while Amy left unnerved and not wanting to be alone. I was also impressed by how confidently the movie was directed by someone as young as Parsons and how well he crafted a singular story while at the same time building the foundation for a franchise.

Moving the film to HBO Max feels like the natural next step for a story that originally spread because people could discover it at home and immediately send it to someone else. The streaming release should also work well for anyone who wants to compare the feature with Parsons’ original shorts. September 25 feels like a smart date to see whether Backroomscan find an even larger audience, arriving just as horror viewing begins accelerating toward Halloween.
