The Beyond Remake Planned by Severin Films and Hangtime
A The Beyond remake is in development as the first project from a new partnership between Hangtime International Pictures and Severin Films. The companies are teaming up to revisit select genre films, beginning with Lucio Fulci’s 1981 supernatural horror classic. No director, cast or release date has been announced.
The Beyond remake launches a new partnership
Hangtime and Severin say they intend to secure English-language remake rights for genre titles that could reach theaters, streaming services and physical media. According to Variety’s original report, the companies are planning several projects over the next two years, with The Beyond first in line. That is a development plan, not a confirmed production or release schedule.
Hangtime co-CEO Frank Murray described the project as an opportunity for a filmmaker to reinterpret Fulci’s work for a new audience. He also pointed to the possibility of exploring more of the director’s Gates of Hell films, although no additional remakes have been formally named.
Severin’s involvement is particularly interesting. The label has spent years restoring and releasing cult and international genre cinema on physical media. Its co-founder David Gregory said the partnership intends to respect the films’ legacy while bringing them to another generation of horror fans.
Why Fulci’s original is a difficult film to revisit
In the 1981 film, a woman inherits a Louisiana hotel that may sit above one of the entrances to Hell. What follows is less a conventional haunted-hotel story than a nightmare of unsettling imagery, graphic effects and dreamlike logic. Fulci directed the film between City of the Living Dead and The House by the Cemetery, the three loosely connected movies commonly called his Gates of Hell trilogy.
That atmosphere is a big part of why the original remains a cult favorite. A new version could revisit its central premise, but it is still too early to know whether the remake will preserve Fulci’s surreal approach or take the story in a different direction. No remake footage or official artwork has been released; the image accompanying this article is from the 1981 film.
For now, the concrete news is the partnership and its first planned title. We’ll know much more about the The Beyond remake once a filmmaker and production details are announced.
